Powder coating - do I have to strip first?

Powder coaters normally shot blast first, so i guess it depends what you are getting done ie if its delicate you might want to strip it yourself or it may be slightly cheaper to strip it yourself first.

if the original paint is powder and is mint then you can powder over powder

A powder coater last week did my frame the wrong colour, asked for orange and got dark metallic red, He said if I didn't like it he would strip it in a tank of acid. I didn't think it would be a good move to fill the frame with acid. I stripped it by hand the first time cos I didn't want him spending too long blasting it incase he holed it .... which he did
Stripped by hand a second time filled the holes with braze and it is now at another powder coat company.
So yeah I would strip it by hand ... and don't leave it with a donkey.

I was told that there is a maximum time of about 5 days between blasting and powder coating. This is probably due to oxidisation and probably doesn't matter for non-steel frames - but I could be completely wrong - it has been known :D
