Took my Bullseye cranks into my local powder coaters the other day, he was a little worried about doing them, his concerns were that the coating would fill the treads and other small holes. When you guys have had this done have you had similar problems? Should I bung the holes etc?

Cheers
Matt :?

Most powder coaters should have little rubber bungs that go in threads alternatively stick some old bolts in them.

Larger holes can be successfully masked by rolling some thin card (eg. cereal packet) and sticking it in the hole. Then pack the centre to make it a good tight fit.

PC

If the guy can't seal the threads don't get it done there, he's clearly not up to the job! My PC man specialises in Cycles and Motor cycles and does a brilliant job for £50, He even does multi colours and custom Pearlescent Flambo colours like this, which is a sunglasses bright job.
:D :D

Wold ranger, that looks a quality job they have done and for £50 , mine was going to charge £20 for the cranks!!, think I am going to try another one.

Coating

That included chemical stripping, then fine glass bead polishing (safe on alloy) all threads plugged and sealed than quality coat finish, they do a lot of competition Auto finishing. Quite a few local bike shops use them too. They also ride MTB and do the local MC Trials circuits, very obliging. I've paid up to £120 and had to wait 8 weeks for not as good a job elsewhere.

I have found a great powdercoater. I took Frankenshite's frame, P2 Fork and stem, My Cannondale Frame, Fork and Bars, and the 2 pce air filter box for my Interceptor. They were ready a week later as promised and apart from a few small blemishes on the frankenshite frame an absolutely top job was done. The price? £30 all in!! One of the benefits of living oop north!
His colours are limited a little, but he had the ones I wanted- even mixed a custom metalic bronzy brown for Frankenshite- my retro roadster singlespeed project 8)

Colour has not come out well on picture- it is much more limey. A top job!

Clunker, get a pro to do the job, he should have silicone bugs of all shapes and sizes to mask off any bolt holes etc. Bettablast.co.uk is the site of the guys who did my frame. Have a look at there motorbike stuff, carburetters etc and a mtb crank seems a piece of cake in comparison.
