Thinking about it I have several bikes on the go at any
one time so each one is not getting as much wear.
So yes use it but not all the time.
This exactly, i was wearing out all of the components on my main rider bike (1998 Kona Caldera) and Chrisv40 said to me it was because i was doing all of my riding on it, over 1500 miles last year alone, this ate the chain/cassette/chainrings/hubs/rims.....
His were all in comparably immaculate condition due to him spreading his riding over an undisclosed amount of bikes and kept the wear and tear down/condition up!
I have what i see as an immaculate 1997 Marin Rift Zone FRS, ive had it since the end of december and have only ridden it about three or four times now, simply because the condition of the bike is way too nice to be out in the mud and grinding paste that is winter around here/anywhere!
But now the trails are drying out, its been out a couple of times of late, last friday afternoon i did 25 miles on it, hard and set a couple of PR's on locals rooty descents with strava!
I also had it out on our wednesday night ride too, unfortunately strava crashed and i dont know what i did, but im not that bothered as the ride is amazing, and i love being on the bike, but right now its is hanging back on its perch in the bedroom sleeping as ill be out on the kona or the zaskar next time so as to keep the wear and tear down!
Apologies for the essay, but all bikes should be ridden imo, but if you ride them in turn with others, youre going to be enjoying the bike, and still keeping it in good condition!
