Dear All,

I'm soon to take delivery of my first:

a) Aluminium frame

and

b) Non painted/raw aluminium finish

I have had some excellent polishing advice - thank you Pickle  - but i wanted to find out if anyone has any experience of lacquering a newly buffed frame?

I realise that the frame would have to be clear of any polish etc

Just don't know if I could keep up with the long term polishing

Ideas please

Thanks, M

I wouldnt worry. Once you are on top of the polishing, it only needs doing maybe every 3 or 4 rides (if they are sh1tty ones).

id never clear it , i love polishing and if you scratch it itl oxidise under the clear and just look manky

once youve done a polishing session a quick wax will keep it shiny , i sometimes just give it a wipe with gt85 ( makes it smell nice too  )

never bothered myself but read car wax is the stuff to use , even turtle wax creates a protective layer aparently

definately dont laquer the polished alloy. just look at polished and laquered car wheels after a couple of years. not a good idea

Cheers dude.

What do you suggest for waxing?

I found my bare alloy E3 frame ok untill i started commuting on it once the salt was on the roads, the salt was leaving major stains on the surface that would not come off even with metal polish  , i was worried about tha salt eating into the frame so i've stopped using it, the staining only came off with a Brillo pad.

As for re-laquering it i dont think there is anything off the shelf that would work successfully, if you want to go that route getting it clear anodised would be the best option, member Kaiser recommended automotive stuff called Jetseal (i think), try doing a Google search for that

The king of metal polish is Meguiars NXT All Metal Polysh (sic). It will bring ally up to a show standard shine straight from 600 grade sandpaper by hand in no time- its an amazing polish. It is polymer based so only need re-doing every three months in any weather. I have just done the tattiest XT cranks with them and they are stunning- my other cranks still look show standard after 5 weeks and several wet rides.

Thank you Si.

So if I prep the frame with 600 grade wet n dry then apply this? :?

Sounds just the ticket and cheap too
