A Direct On Line switch (starter) is used to start motors of less than 5hp (3.75kw). It connects power directly to the motor, by using a contactor (relay) and includes an overload, a type of circuit breaker, to protect the motor from burning out if it became overloaded. Most domestic appliances don't use a DOL starter, just a simple switch, hence motors get burnt out on hoovers, washing machines etc.
Electrical lesson over, I have had quite a lot of success polishing with my 150w 2950rpm machine mart grinder, fitted with a 6" polishing mop I got off ebay. I have never used proper polishing compound, just Autosol, applied with a toothbrush and polished off on the wheel, although you might need the proper compounds in order to get a "mirror" finish.
