I was travelling maybe 20 as I approached a traffic calming chicane, the car coming through was there before me so I was slowing down even more.

All I knew of what happened next was a flash in my periphery, of a spaniel trailing a lead flying out into my lane from behind the oncoming car. Then a dull thwack on the side of my car.

Stopped and made sure dog got to vet, actually sorted by the bobbies as the owner was pissed and started a fight with onlookers berating him for letting his dog run into the road, so they were called.

100% no fault on my part, handshakes all round, but I feel shit all the same.

Tomorrow I will get in touch with the vets and ask what the result was; but dog was faring well when the bobbies took her and her other owner, thankfully only half cut, to the vets.

So, as if anyone needed reminding, watch your animals and kids by the roads.

Obviously not your fault, but a great example of why those 'low' speed limits need to be closely obeyed, even though the dog running out would have happened anyway, we're you to have been doing 10mph faster, it could easily blamed upon you.

I had a bad one night last year when a guy let a Patterdale off the lead in a park. I was driving on the road next to the park and saw something out of the corner of my eye and realised it was dog. I slammed the brakes on but still went over the dog, complete with horrible sound effects of the dog thumping off the bottom of the car before it popped out the back.

The dog turned out to belong to a Big Issue seller who was totally freaked out as the dog was the only thing he really had in his life. I offered to drive him to the local vet hospital who do free work for unemployed people but he wouldn't go as the dog was only limping a bit and had a big lump on it's head. I drove him back to his flat and made him promise to take it to the vet the next day.

It was only after getting home I realised how shaken up I was. I've hit wildlife a few times including foxes but it was the first, and only I hope, time I've ever hit a pet.

I have killed a cat before.

I mean a domestic one, killed dozens of ferals out east.

There is no way I could be blamed for this, as the dog ran into the car near the rear.

Last time I hit a dog was in 1992 in Romania, and it slid along my sill and whacked my rear wheel arch, leaving a dent in it.

I was totally freaked out, worrying it was one of the many kids that were playing in the street.

Very upsetting. No matter what the circumstances are, being the harbinger of injury is incredibly counter-intuitive.

Something similar happened on my driving test, but the dog got taken out by the oncoming car in the other direction. Still it left me pretty shaken for the rest of the test!

i saw the dog running down the pavement glance over its shoulder and i just thought it's going to step out into the road, sure enough it did between two cars so the oncoming car didn't stand a chance to brake.

Needless to say I failed that test, i've only ever hit a pigeon personally and i felt pretty bad about that too.

Went in and had a chat with the vet today, and the dog was absolutely fine. Just given a pain killer injection.

Very relieved!

I will have a yarn with the owners next time I see them.

Very cute doggie. We have room for more if they feel they can't take proper care of it.

We got a badger going up to Skye for a macretro meet
Happened so fast my mate had zero chance to react,swerving could possibly have killed us so he had to keep going.He's an animal lover so was a tad upset to say the least as the rest of the journey was quite.
I think the badger was foraging at the side of the road and our approach startled it into running out into the road.It could have ran off into the undergrowth so was probably 50/50 :?

Instant,it didnt suffer. :?

If he was going 10 mph faster he would have missed it!

Joking apart, glad everything turned out ok, it is remarkable how tough dogs are - I was following a minibus that ran over a labrador a few years ago - the dog had a quick spaz out in the middle of the road then ran off, I saw it the next day and it was on a lead!

As long as it hit the last third of my vehicle there is no way I was going to be held accountable so long as I was not reaching light speed.

Badgers.

Many seen killed on the roads here, very sad.

I came upon one recently hit by Aviemore, its mate circling it. So sad. I grabbed the corpse and threw it down into the trees, hopefully saved the mate from a similar demise.
