PlayStation 3 not recognizing discs.....

hello men......at about 3pm, as my son was using the console, it froze up....i did the usual man thing of turn it off and back on again, but the game icon has disappeared from the main screen as if no game is inserted.....has anyone had a similar experience?......console is four years old...... :?

I had that.

My PS3 is a release day 60GB one. I cleaned up the disc using a screen cloth. One of those ones for glasses etc. Put a new game in 1st and ran it, then ejected the disc and put the new one in once it'd gone back too th home screen. If a fingerprint is in a few certain places it doesn't read properly..

I also suggest blowing into the disc slot with a disc in slightly.. While the console is off, the disc will hold the protective cloth open enough to get your breath through. Thus blowing away some dust.

Also I have found wiping off any dust on the air vents allover the console and hoovering/blowing into them once you've wiped the dust with your finger helps airflow and keeps your console quieter.

Original 40GB model? Blue ray laser failure, quite common and can be fixed with a new laser for about £40, the test is will it still read regular DVD's, if it does that's definitely the cause.
I replaced one for a friend, not a hard job, took about an hour, if that.
