Planet X Jack Flash build

The Kilt

Old School Hero
I decided I wanted a trusty jump bike in the fleet as I miss a bit of jumping. I was originally after a Santa Cruz Chameleon in small, as a picture in an old 2001 MBUK mag got me hooked, however the Jack Flash popped up on eBay just down the road from me for cheap so though why not! Not sure of the year, if anyone can help that would be great. No disc mounts, horizontal drop outs and gussets galore!

Plan was to swap over all the parts from the Kona in the background, however the steerer on forks from the kona is too short (thankfully as they are only 80mm travel) so I have a set of matching yellow Z1s on the way. Got a semi build using the parts from the Kona, but I also got with the frame some Planet X BMF wheels on lx hubs (proper wide rims!) which I am cleaning up and servicing. Hopefully have the build sorted as soon as I receive the forks….

Small update….forks arrived today. Nice Z1 BAMs in yellow. Note this is not the colour scheme I am going for, just so happens everything sees to be yellow! I will assemble everything, see how it rides and then probably respray the frame and forks, with the forks being the traditional orange for Z1s.
The forks need a bit of tidying up. The bolts for the arch are different and some are badly rounded. And didn’t come with V brake mounts, so I will steal those from the blue Z4 I have currently on it.

Its been a while on the update front, completed a few months but only managed to get out on it yesterday properly. Took it over a local jump spot, which wasnt as good as i last remembered from a few years ago so if i have time i may start to dig, but with 2 kids and a wife time is something i do not have!
All in all rides pretty sweet, forks are nice and plush and tracks the ground surprisingly well. The tyres were also pretty grippy considering there is barely any cornering knobs, however it is pretty compact right now where i am (Purbeck in dorset). Only niggle is the hubs (currently LX, desperately need a hope or similar, see wanted section) and need some better chain tensioners (not currently on there) as they didnt go deep enough into the dropouts. I will replace other bits, such as the red hope seat clamp for a blue x-lite QR when one comes up, and i would like to change the bar and stem to x-lite too. I used to have the steve peat assissin bars which were great. Or the stem could be Azonic, and V12 pedals, and maybe change the cranks at some point.
Jumps really nicely, and corners well and surprisingly light. Nice being on a playful 26" again. I mainly use it a what I call a "Jib bike" outside my house, practising 180's, manuals, etc. Anyway enough blurb, pics below:
