Well, as long as you keep the travel 70mm ish or less you'll be fine.

Whether you want period correctness or performance is up to you, I have Manitou SXs on a couple of mine and they work nicely if you can live with the forks being a couple of years newer than the frame.....they're cheap on 'bay too
