In my ongoing attempt to place timeline and memory during my hospitalisation currently, I've put up a story I wrote for an American magazine on a trip I made to Lightweight in Germany.

It was part of my 5 ferman factories in 5 days barmy road trip but was also incredible to see one of the ultimate carbon masters doing their thing to make shockingly expensive and light wheels by hand.

I was very lucky in 2002 to be in the position to purchase a pair of Lightweight wheels; I was one of the first riders in the UK to have them. Put simply, they are the most astonishing bicycle components I have ever used; probably the only bike parts that live up to the hype that the media give them.
At the time the only wheel specification you could get were 53mm rims, tubular, 20 spokes front/rear; today the range has been expanded to include a disc and various rim depths/spoke counts.
I did get a chance to have a look at a more modern Lightweight wheelset and what surprised me was how flexible the spokes are; you could easily flex them with your fingers. On my wheels, the spokes are totally rigid. Not sure what that does for performance; however one thing about my wheels that is very noticeable is how rigid they are. Despite me weighing the best part of 95kg, there is no flex in my wheels at all, even under a full sprint. The only wheel I've ever used that comes close to matching the Lightweights in rigidity is the Zipp disk wheel.
All in all, it is a component that is a genuine milestone in bike design.
