Peugeot Vitus 979 frame brake cable tube erosion

Hey Guys,

I bought this frame and unfortunately wasn't made aware of this problem. I have taken it to a welder of sorts and he said that he would have to cut open the frame to get to the inner tube to replace it with a whole new tube. I definitely don't fancy that, is there anything else i can do? I love this frame, it's beautiful and in good condition but sadly it has this one problem.

Any help would be appreciated :)

Marc

Hi Marc and welcome to the forum :)

Whatever you do don't let anyone cut open the frame. I'm not totally sure I see what the problem is from the photo's, can you not get a new brake cable outer to slide through? If its just about looks, I'd tidy up the end with a hacksaw and file just taking off a couple of mm.

If the whole thing is corroded beyond use I'd flush it off, seal up the hole and use cable clips......... hopeless trying to cut open the frame :(

Yeah I was thinking that myself but was saving it as 'last resort' measure. I haven't tried putting a brake cable through it because I wanted to sort the issue before I let a new cable get all chewed up. As a reference point, this is what it should look like...

It doesn't look totally corroded. It looks like it's just damage from the entrance to a few mil down. Thanks for the suggestion though. Yeah when I heard those words, I almost shed a tear :( lol

Re:

Looks like it's done a few sweaty miles of turbo trainer work from the corrosion.

I can't remember from when I owned my Vitus if that tubing goes right through of if it's just a short section at each end. If a short section here is an easy way of feeding the cable through.
Length of string, and a vacuum cleaner, feed the string through the frame (don't forget to tie one end onto something) and suck the string through with the vacuum hose, then attach your brake cable to the string and pull through

Haha that's awesome. I was thinking after I get this sorted, how the frig do I feed this cable through??! :/ thanks for the advice, much appreciated :)

I think the problem you might have is that the metal is too damaged to hold the outer cable properly . if that is the case you can run full lengh outer .
