Peugeot Festina

Retro Newbie
Hi, New here so apologies if I've posted in the wrong place. I should also say that I know next to nothing about bikes other than I know I quite like retro stuff (in general!) I still have an old 10 speed racer that I had new when I was 12 or 13 a Falcons Eddy Merckx - Reynolds 53, all orange, with half chromed front forks, double butted large flange quick release hubs alloy rims, Brooks saddle etc. I can still just about fit on it and was contemplating a sympathetic restoration - in fact I've been pondering on that for about a year now but tentative quotes were a bit frightening!

However...at the weekend I spotted in the window of a charity shop a Peugeot Festina with a 'chromoloy' (?) frame or the like. It looked to be in really good condition & to teh casual observer (me) pretty unmolested. From what little I've managed to find out it still seems to have the original rims, seat post (Saddle I'm not sure about), 14 speed Shimano RSX brakes, derailleur, brake/shifters, with 'tracer design' front 'cogs', ITM bars, Rigid wheel rims & so on.

Two questions really. 1) are these bikes any good? 2) Does it sound original?

I've tried looking at the old brochures etc. but can't find it in them, but would be delighted to be pointed at some useful info!

As far as I know it was supplied to the UK

I'm not looking to do much with it, just the occasional ride out.

Feel free to knock it - I'll not be upset. I bought it just because I think it looked quite cool, unlike me!

Cheers

Hello Potski and welcome to the forum! ;)

In general inquiries which include imagery will generate more and more meaningful replies than those without.

Here are two reliquaries of back Peugeot catalogues.

You could browse them to see if you can find a match for your subject cycle...

Thanks Juvela

Well I had a browse through those & drew a blank - no matching pictures. I guess it is just a tarted up version of another bike in the catalogues. I suspect its from around 1989/99.

I left the bike behind at my Moms as I couldn't get it in the car so any pictures i do have are very partial shots but I'll bung on what I have.

Cheers

All I have at the moment.

Hello and welcome!

I can't really tell much from the pictures but I'd say that it's probably a 90's bike from the RSX brifters and Tig welding. The 26.4 seat post points to plain gauge tubing but the chromoly sticker means it's not stove pipe tubing which is good. I will say it looks like someone at some point changed out the bottom bracket because there's a spacer behind the fixed cup to push the crank away from the frame. Generally speaking, you wouldn't see that on a factory bottom bracket. So things could have been changed out at some point.

I'd venture to guess it's a middling bike in the lineup and probably a great bike to ride. My first road bike was a Peugot UO-8. That bike was a scary bike to ride and had 27" steel rims and Mafac Racer center pull brakes and the infamous Ava Death Stem that broke while I was riding it. By the late 80's steel road bikes had dropped most of the weirdness and really came into being great riding bikes.

We used to sell Peugeot at this time, but mtb/hybrid only as there was almost no demand for racers in the city at that point.

Fantastic. Thanks v.much. I rather hope it won’t be as scary as your Pug!
