Peugeot 653 Athena questions

Does the Peugeot have metric tubing? It's another factor in seatpost sizes.

A carefully-made frame in imperial tubing will take a 27.4 post, if there is any ovalisation during fabrication then it's 27.2. Certainly my Dawes 653 won't take a slightly over-tolerance 27.3 post.

Re:

As I understand it different gauges of tubing were used, hence differences in things like seat post sizes.

Originalshinkicker's website on SBDU frames provides the best information I've read on this thorny subject anywhere and helped me understand that there were differences, even if I don't necessarily understand why. In any event, it's a brilliant website to browse:
https://raleigh-sb4059.com/2017/02/01/r ... -pin-size/

The two Peugeot 753's and one Peugeot 653 58 cm frames I have each have Campag 26.8 seatposts, 2 of which fit very snugly and 1 of the 753's is a little less snug but certainly doesn't slip when tightened - maybe it should be 27?

Good luck

Ah - I see. I had to do a bit of web searching for some pics of the Peugeot (most of which seemed to be postings here) but see that it is plastered with Reynolds transfers, so I wasn't being entirely stoopid in my assumption. When upgraded to C Record, it can almost take your eyes off that pink (not for me, I'm afraid) and it looks quite smart in original angular Athena (again, if you hold your hands over the pink bits) .

Before I get thrown off the site for being rude about this charming, flamboyant and stylish scheme <cough/>, the point still stands that a tube set *ought* to have the same sizes, regardless of who melts it together. Back in the day, t used to be one of the standard tests for a "ringer" with a Reynolds badge on to check the seat pin size. Odds were that the bent, brush over-painted frame with the stamped ends and steel pin wasn't the "753 Dynaflyte" masterpiece that it claimed to be and was probably on this month's police list. (I exaggerate just a little, but just maintain a healthy scepticism of bikes with unusual sizes).

I know what you're saying, but you may aswell leave the stamped ends and cheapo groupset on there, nowadays the mass produced stuff seems to fetch more money than quality bikes from the smaller frame builders. Nostalgia I suppose

Agreed on the above. There are plenty of alleged 531SL and 753 frames around with suspiciously ordinary seatpost sizes!

The bit I can't recall is whether Peugeot used the metric sized tubes on 653, in which case the Raleigh info is irrelevant as they used imperial sizes. I tried the tables in the Tony Oliver book, but they don't cover metric gauges.

Yes this one was a rather tidy ebay example. I rarely see them in the smaller sizes. We will see soon if its as good as the pictures. They rarely are. I dunno if its expensive.. most of my collection is pretty modern (a few Colnago masters and C40s aside) and it cost half what the handlebars on my Dogma cost, so its all relative.

I always was a fan of Team Z though. I have a mint TVT 92 in the 1990 greg lemond build spec... so this one in the same scheme as robert millar rode in my hometown race in 1989 will be a nice companion to it. Now if only I could find a mind Sean Kelly PDM Concorde in a small size and a Stephen Roche 87 Battaglin....

If it could take a modern group I would have considered a neo retro build with shined up modern Athena 11 speed... but as it is the debate now is Athena 7 speed as specc'd by the factory vs a full C record build.

I will measure up the tubes when it comes in.

The external seat tube size on mine is 28mm not 28.6.

I think that's the metric size tubing. Don't quote me on this, but certainly Peugeot used metric sized Reynolds tubesets at some times. What I have been unable to find out is whether they did them in 653. Certainly 753 was available in metric.

28.0 stepped down from the imperial size 27.2 seatpost is 26.8, which fits the upthread evidence from Chat Noir.

Re:

Here are some Reynolds catalogues from around 1992 that will provide further clarification and refer to the different gauges for 753 'over time'. The one that sets out the tube specifications says that metric tubesets were also available on request. These also clarify the 753 stays question, although looking in the bottom bracket and seeing the silver solder is very reassuring!

These images have been posted before. I like the old Reynold's tubing but my particular favourite is 731os on which I found I could happily do long multi-day rides. Sadly a crack has put paid to further activities until such time as I can get over to Bob Jacksons in Leeds and allow Donald to have a long look and consider what, if anything, could be done (this was originally the result of an accident where I was knocked off the bike by an oversized motorhome near the top of the Bealach na Ba, repaired at BJ's but now a crack has appeared ..).

However, I also happen to have a Gazelle Exception made out of 731os and some unusual stainless steel forks and stays so am not entirely bereft.

Good luck
