Pedal Problem...

Hi all,

I'm working on my current project at the mo - its a late 70's Daniel Salmon.

I bought this from a guy who had turned it into an "urban cruiser" !

Anyway I took off the pedals (French thread) and have found that any pedal I fit is as loose as a goose - I think he put the pedals on the wrong cranks!

So what to do? Would it be possible to re-tap the cranks for BS threading as they're slightly bigger or is there a way to fix the damage? I should mention the cranks are TA Tevano in great condition so I really want to keep them if pos.

Thanks in advance. Dave

Re:

I'd have thought that if someone had 'succeeded' in getting the left pedal all the way home onto the right crank and right pedal all the way home onto the left crank, there would be absolutely no thread left visible in the cranks, apart from maybe a few 'diamond' shapes, which would resemble the surface of a coarse file.

Is it possible that all the pedals you are trying are French thread, and the Tevano cranks are in fact (hopefully intact) English thread? That would be a loose fit.

Re:

After trying French threaded pedals I thought the same - so tried English threaded pedals - which are too big - hence thinking it might be possible to re-tap.

Re:

I believe Hilary Stone offers to re-tap any French cranks he has for sale to English thread if the customer desires, so it is possible. I don't know how much luck you will have in finding a 9/16" tap in France?
Since the difference between 14mm and 9/16" is less than 0.3 mm, I would imagine that a successful re-tap depends on having somewhat intact threads to begin with. Do the internal threads in the cranks still look like threads, or do they look chewed up?

Re:

Thanks for input guys - the threads are quite bad, as I mentioned the pedals don't bite at all.

I have seen the VAR bush / shims which look like a real option - however, I have spoken with a retired cycle mechanic Terry Manuel here in Brittany who has the correct 9/16th tap and is willing to give it a go (at my own risk!) - so we'll see how that works out.

cheers, Dave

Re:

Have had a chance to look at the pedal re-tapping - in the end I borrowed the correct 9/16th taps and had a go myself.

Tested them on an old French Shimano crank with no problem - in the end it was quite easy - they cut through very easily.

1st photo shows new threads which are nice and clean 2nd photo before cutting - English thread pedals now fitted.
