My XP home PC is struggling with any internet access via the BT home hub.

Connection is maddeningly slow - either via Ethernet or USB.
However the hub is OK for other PCs (by wireless or Ethernet).
I've cleaned up the hard disc, de-fragged, checked for spyware with several different products, etc. I have tidied registry entries.

Its equally slow on IE, Safari or Firefox.

Any ideas? :(

have you turned the router off?

have you done the 'msconfig' thing? switching off any unwanted processes

sounds like something is using a bit of your interweb

But other PC's are fine on the router. My initial thoughts are;

1:- PC is generally bogged down, and this is where the "msconfig" thing comes in handy as you say.
2:- There is a virus/spyware/malware on the computer using resources that hasn't been picked up by previous scans, in which case I always recommend http://www.malwarebytes.org/ first then go from there.

I used System Mechanic to tidy up the processes, but I guess I ought to try another look.

Thanks for the Malwarebytes link.

The speed test works fine with the other PCs - as I say, the router seems fine and I got 6.4 Mb/s. However, even the Yahoo home page can take 3 minutes to load on the PC, and the internet is effectively unusable. It seems OK for the first minute or so, then grinds to a halt.

The ZoneAlarm firewall finds no outgoing activity.

The problems started two weeks ago roughly, with browsing becoming increasingly unresponsive over a long period.

I ran Comfix and it all came up clean. The PC is generally OK, adequately responsive if aged (6 years old, but I added a lot of memory last year). The HDD got corrupted a year ago and I restored the system.

I tried a rollback, but XP says that there are no changes since the last auto restore point 3 months ago.
