So I see they are now scamming for fees on gift payments even when it comes from your paypal balance or from your bank account.
Granted it's only 1/2 a percent, but it's still a scam! :x

Just wanted to get that off my chest!

They are shameless. Half a percent it may be but multiply that across a couple of hundred thousand. The sooner someone comes up with an alternative the better, they really get my goat what with charging you for this, that and the other AND charging you to access your own money!

Is that just recently? I could gift with my debit card for free (credit card had a charge).

Re:

Looks like he's right enough
The last two payments I made dated 4th & 5th April both have 0.5% added

Mine still says "No fee if you use your PayPal balance, bank account or debit card to send money to friends and family within the UK"

It might be down to the type of account held with Paypal, or even the account the recipient has

I made several gifts this month already (one for £175) all funded by debit card and no extra charges were applied although I just tried sending funds to an American contact, and £2.15 charges would've been applied but not if the recipient was in UK

A-ha. I think that must be it as my recipient was not in the UK. I still paid in GBPs though so don't understand how it costs them money, but at least the mystery is solved!

Yeah, they added a charge awhile ago that applies to any transaction where the money has to cross borders, if I remember correctly.

Re:

You can argue over the details, but in the end PayPal have to make money somehow

I don't work for them by the way

There are alternatives out there and more coming, but they have a good product and are well positioned, will be interesting to see how this industry develops
