Paul Mechs: Where can they be used...

A few questions on Pauls mechs. They are stunning to look at but how practical are they?
Can you run them as top or bottom pull?
Can you use them with indexed and non indexed shifters?
What is the shifting like? Smooth?
What range of gears can they cover? How would you alter this? :?

I think that's everything.

Experts and neersayers will be along shortly but from what little I have learned here they shift like crap but look awesome.

Just don't compare them with Shimano

paul derailleurs

In regards to whether they can be top pull or bottom pull there is usually an extra plate that comes with when purchased. My Paul mech is set up for top pull right now but I have the extra plate that can be exchanged for bottom pull.
I have used them with grip shift and they shift fine that way, others I've heard of say that Shimano shifters don't work as well.

MECH WARS !!!!!!!!!

UGH !!!!! LET IT START ....SWEET LOOKING GREEN ONES ..DONT HAVE A CLUE HOW THEY WORK TO MUCH CASH FOR ME hail retro bike !!!!

Look good. Work shit :)

Only used rears though.. can be made to work 'ok', but not best for shifting tbh.

IIRC the rear mech was an absolute arse to set up and was very sensitive to chain type and cassette make. Main problem is the lack of the top floating jockey wheel, main reason shimano mechs are so reliable and enjoy taking abuse!!!

Personally it's the big "S" every time

Stunning

I agree! They are beautifully made but a real git to set up :(

I have managed it a few times but i do not think i could trust one for an epic week away of riding :o

UNBEATEN for show pieces but no-were near as good to use as the big S from old or new groupos

I have a proshift mech with proshift gripshifters. They work well together after you have spent a good hour setting every parameter up. You then have a 20 minuite window of perfect shifting and then the wind changes direction and it all goes pete tong.

They are ok in dry conditions, but don't like any intrusion of mud and or water.
