My old VW was on 156,000 before the engine ripped itself apart on Haldon Hill, not bad for a WW2 design and a 1600 at that pushing that thing.
Fault was slipped ignition timing from a worn distributor, it ended up blowing a hole through no.3 piston ( the one that gets the warmest), blowing the rocker covers off and leaving a trail of burning oil on the way down the other side of that hill.
Not bad bearing in mind most say air cooled engines don't last more than 80 k miles
