Won a park tool pcs-10 off the bay from a non bike seller. Good positive feedback on all his other sales though.

Descriptor said: worth £130, works very well, shows some signs of a little rust'

Pictures didn't offer anything to worry about.

Paid just shy of £90 delivered for it.

Arrived today.

Had to take it to pieces with a mallet and it's in a pretty bad way

Rust all over

Tubes inside covered in brown sludge

Spiders etc prove it was stored outside for a good period

Base won't clip properly

Most of the Allen bolts are rust pitted

Q) what should i do?

So far all I've done is contact the seller to let him know I'm far from happy

I'd love an opinion and a what to do guide to restore it, get it to a nice place. As it's pretty solid and made out of steel I'm assuming the sludge and what not can be just cleaned off?

I think the best i can do is negotiate a part refund and go through e-bay if he doesn't play ball

Any other opinions?

Cheers fellas

Perhaps waterblast it completely clean and then use something like POR15, it's like a really hard wearing paint that gets rid of rust.

In two words 'caveat emptor'.
Put it down to experience, you buy new and you pay more,
buy off eBay, save a few quid and take your chance.
He covered himself by saying 'works very well, shows some signs of a little rust' . That phrase 'a little rust' is a very subjective term and I can't imagine eBay would entertain an intervention.

You pays your money and you take a chance.
Sorry if that seems harsh, no intention to offend.
It's just my humble opinion. Soz.

I have one of those... As far as the inside of the tubes, mine also has stuff in it... I believe they coated the inside with some sort rust preventer... Like Frame saver or the equivalent...

Descriptions can be a handful... descriptive terms are usually subjective... If they said there was no rust, then you absolutely have a case. "some signs of a little rust" is exactly what you got.... It is just that your version of a little seems to be different than theirs....

Unfortunately, I don't think you have a case.... Unless the item was intentionally mis-represented.

EDIT: someone is quicker on the draw....

Not too subjective, little rust is a little, clearly more.

Ebay will find in your favour. ask for partial refund, else return for full refund. Buyer should offer you a choice.

Fair enough. My issue might be better pointed at the 'works very well' which it doesn't because of the rust and general condition.

It's deffo worth a try.
No harm in giving it a go, what do you stand to lose?

But from what I can see the only signs of 'rust' are on the second tube from the right on the pic,
and that ain't proper rust, just a run-off of iron oxide on top of the paint,
but then again I can't see the full extent of your problem but to me proper 'rust' is deep and severe oxidation of the main tube, and not some run off coating the outside of the paint job.

Which takes me back to my point that 'a little rust' is a very subjective term.
BTW best of luck, and if you get no joy from eBay I'm sure that with a little bit of fettling you can get the stand to work just fine.

If you're still not happy I'll take it off your hands for a tenner!
Generous me

How best to clean the tubes?

I'll wait and see if the seller responds then go from there

As you say, wait and see.
BTW, lady luck doesn't exactly follow you close by does she?
Noticed on your sig. that you've had two bikes stolen and one broke.
And the bloke on your avatar seems a bit of a klutz too

All the best matey.
