paranoid about selling stuff?+ buying uneeded stuff?

I used to hang on to stuff for years thinking I'll use it.
In the last three months or so I've been having a clear out and now have the funds for stuff that I really want, not the stuff I have and might use.
If you have a forseable plan, hang on to it if not punt it on.

I seem to collect stuff as I don't like to pay lots for old parts that could easily be knackered.
So I've not had a for sale advert up.
I've sold for not to much to wanted adds to people I recognise and know they need the part, but most of my surplus to ends up with people I go for a ride on, if I happen to have it I give it to them once I figure I don't actually need it.

Nothing wrong with hoarding quality working parts, you just never know when it might be useful.

well that's it, i have bought bikes previously and sold the more basic parts but stuff like m900 it seems silly to part with it, the dx not so much but i got most of it as NOS so i think it would be unwise to lose that as it's a good reliable group.

like i said i don't NEED to sell but i don't want to buy any more frames, unless something really nice/rare/interesting comes up.

I literally threw a bunch of old sun tour XC pro and "old" shimano xt/xtr stuff away 3 years ago because I couldn't imagine ever having a use for it... Now I'm scouring eBay trying to locate those same things.

I'm not throwing anything away again!

Yikes I feel for you.

My paradox manifests itself in an annoying way - if I can bring myself to sell something, I literally jump on RB and buy something else with the money. I seem to be able to maintain a healthy flow of bike bits to and from the house.

It really depends...I find the stuff that I'm reluctant to sell falls into a certain zone between NOS and 'good shape'. I've learned over the last couple years that I dread using NOS parts, but will gladly install something with a bit of cosmetic imperfection if it's in perfect mechanical condition. Other parts collect though, and I don't what to do about it-they fall into the 'perfectly good but look like crap' category, usually DX/LX or older XT stuff. Scuffed derailleurs, scratched cranksets, cantilevers that nobody seems to desire, etc. Not worth a lot really, can't toss it because it seems wasteful and maybe someday I'll need parts. It ends up taking up a lot of space.

so here's the opposite side of being paranoid about selling stuff, this morning i have been looking through the sale section, and i spy an atac stem, silver 130mm, 1 1/8.

a useful size in a good colour that would match with many builds, i find myself thinking i should buy that, i may need it.

i don't need it at the moment i have nothing i could use it on except my explosif but that has a matching velocity stem so i know there is no point in buying it but should i buy it? just incase i need it?

dumb isn't it? :?

:D

it isnt dumb. you know fine well when you do need it you wont be able to find one!

if you are in a position where you dont need to sell then dont worry.

i tend to sell stuff off as and when i need a cash boost. i am trying to be more carefull at the moment so i dont need to shift stuff on, unless like ben says, it iis to help a friend/forum friend out

i like to keep an uncluttered life, so stuff gets sold in fairly short order when it reaches the end of its usefulness. a few key spares stick around (my m950 bottom bracket for example) but i dont like to have lots of stuff lying around

i briefly kick myself if i find a need for one later, but it's all swings and roundabouts

declutter is also why i dont have a fleet of bikes. I need clarity of purpose in a bike for it to justify its place.
