Panaracer tyres

Pulled one of my bikes out of the back of the shed and found this. The bike was last used probably November 2011 and I always put 100psi in them using a track pump so it wasn't there back then. The tyre has about 10psi in it now and is obviously scrap. Good job I noticed it as I was about to pump it up again !

Looks nasty, good job you noticed it!

I had a similar experience when I got the wheels for the Duralinox out of storage to use in a recent 10. I thought there was some dirt on the tread - but it wouldn't rub off. On closer inspection it turned out it was the fabric showing through! I don't think I've ever worn a tyre out in this manner before, they usually self-destruct or blow out. Michelin TdF special issue which matched the bike perfectly. The front one is still reasonably OK - anyone out there got one spare??

I used to wear Michelin Hi Lites out like that as well --- patches of tread worn through with just the casing showing underneath. Maybe a Michelin thing.

In defence of Panaracer, I've used Panaracer Paselas for 90% of my road riding over the last dozen years or so, and I've never seen anything like that. Is it possible the tyre had come into contact with a sharp edge? The damage looks more like a cut than a rupture.

Good call oej , I had a closer look at it today and that silver mark on the rim is fresh metal. Something must have caught the tyre although why the damage doesn't line up is a mystery. Maybe the wife did it with the hedge trimmer
