Pace RC200s

Retro Newbie
Looking to get an RC200 as a mate of mine has two but would like a bit of information.

What exactly is the difference between all the Fs, i.e. F1 - F8???

How can I identify each one and is there a preference?

I'm sure that one of my mate's frames has a Titanium sticker at the bottom of the seat tube but am I right in thinking that Pace only ever built with steel?

He's always going on about a certain RC?? that was only made in a very small quantity. How true is that? I've looked everywhere on t'internet but can only find the usual suspects, RC100, RC200 etc. etc.

RC200 (f1) was mat black anodised and came with a royce titanium bottom bracket. They had a "royce titanium" sticker at the bottom of the seat tube.

They were also the only RC200 without a silver bolt on seatcollar, loads of them snapped the seat tube extension. Pace issue letters to all Cat1 dealers advising owners not to use shimmed USE seatposts.
F2 was a shiny F1 without the Royce bottom bracket and loose seatcollar.

Hope that helps.

So the F1 was the only one with the Royce BB?

If I'm buying from someone who hasn't an igloo, are there any other defining features to point us in the right direction of which "F" a frame is?

quite a bit of info on here

the titanium sticker probably is a fastener kit one ,the fork bolts and drop
out bolts being the main ones
theres brochures in the archive section up top too

with the relative scarcity of paces you may limit yourself to much by
going after a specific model year

welcome btw

I think im right in saying that only rc100s and rc200 f1s and f2s have a square seat tube... all the others have a round seat tube...
personally i like all the ones with square seatubes more than the later ones, but it is harder to find a bolt on front mech that will fit.
Also all the old square pace frames are alloy Not steel.. I think pace have only recently started using steel in there frames.
and i really dont think they have ever made a ti frame.

theres a pace serial number thread on here somwhare
i just tried to find it with no luck

that gives you a clue to the F type F3 1234 etc

square seat tubes are rc100 rc200 f1/2
it gets a bit blurry on the f3 to f9 (i think) as some have been repaired
and as someone explained once they some times had to finish batches
of frames using other parts
f300 carbon seat tube

justbackdated is the resident pace fork guru ,and other stuff,an ex pace employee he kindy provides a fork re-furbishment sevice
reasonable prices too i,m told

Pace (until VERY recently) never built in steel, aluminium only.

The sticker could be due to the inclusion of a Royce Titanium BB, or could relate to the use of a Pace stage 2 upgrade kit (titanium bolts used on the forks as apposed to alloy/steel ones)

F-series, The first RC200's were F1's these featured a square seat tube, much like the RC100's. The seat tube I believe went round on the F3's in 1994 ish.
The next major change was the inclusion of a disc tab on the F7 (1998), this was revised on the F8 incarnation which was sold in 99/2000.

Other than the RC100 and the series of RC200's Pace also made the RC250T trials mountainbike, the RC240 24" wheel dual slalom/dirt jump bike, the RC300 (an evolution of the RC200, an XC orientated race frame with yet more external machining on the frame and a carbon fibre seat tube), and the RC500 DH bike (2 revisions, F1 & F2 see the link in my signature).

Numbers wise, this thread gives an indication of the numbers produced of various models http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewto ... icial+pace
To summarise:
- 150 RC100's
- 1875 RC200 of the various itterations
- 710 RC300's
The rarest production pace frames are probably the RC240 (I've never seen one!) and the RC500 (reportedly 20 made, far fewer remaining and one of which I have in my collection of all things Pacey and good :) )

It could be said all Pace are limited run, even over the 7-8 years production run of RC200's if the total was any where near 1875 frames, that is very limited compared to the likes of specialised who produce 100,000+ a year.

As I said, the rarest production run frames are probably the RC240 (not sure how many were made but I havn't ever seen one)& RC500. There have been various (just about one offs) such as the RC100 24" trials bike, Tims "funky pace" etc.
Ofcourse he could be reffering to the RC100 team bikes which were pretty much identical to other 100's but in black. Or the various team versions of the RC200, again the only difference being the colour of the frame.

Other than that you need to give us more to go on.

Team RC100s were grey/yellow till 92 when the strip changed from yellow, black, grey to purple/orange. They were painted black then. Team frames had double butted maintubes and butted seatnstays. Almost ever moving part on the bike was fitted with pitts type sprungball oilers. Still have a bag in my tool box.
Think Duncan left pace at the same time the seat tube went round......
