Pace, how come....

On their suspension forks, the canti mounts are at the back, but on the rc30s, they are on the front?

Makes no sense to me!!!

Although this is only an educated guess, I would say it is because the carbon legs on Pace suspension and RC31 rigid forks limit the torque that can be used to tighten clamp on brake bosses.
Fitting the bosses so the break is to the rear means that the force on the boss is towards the rim when the brakes are applied therefore the clamps don't have to be as tight to maintain effective breaking.
If they were mounted on the front then the force would be away from the rim and the bosses 'could' move.
With the welded bosses on the RC30 this isn't an issue.

When they first came out on the RC100 both the RC35s and the RC30s had their mounts on the back as they were both designed specifically for magura brakes. With the advent of the 'aftermarket' RC35, suitable for other bikes and canti brakes, they introduced the rocker arm to actuate it but this rocker couldn't be used on the RC30, so they mounted the brake on the front. I suppose after this precidence was set they then continued it to enable RC30s to still be used with cantis. The RC31s can be set with front or rear though..

RC30s predate RC35s - they are made for cantilevers which require an uninterrupted straight section for the brake cable, which can only be at the front of the fork.

Suspension forks always have a bridge of some kind and you can put a rocker on them, enabling backward fitting.

Carbon-legged RC31s post-date V-brakes, which don't need a cable outer stop.

(oh and Pete Mcc and myself were writing our posts at the same time, or I woudn't have bothered with mine)

It's a slow day at work and I'm a quick typer!

The RC30s in their most original form were rear mounted as this was part of Pace's unique selling point ie rear mounted front brakes are stonger than front (it's similar in some ways to the Suntour/Scott SE brakes in that the brake is drawn into the rim rather than away from it), but as this was only possible with Maguras they had to change for the release of the canti-friendly RC200 and the aftermarket crowd as dbmtb says!

Interesting thing was that Orange, who used Pace forks from very early on, adopted a rear-mounting brake on their rigid forks which I thought looked a bit odd. It's also something that loads of touring bikes use as it is stronger and doesn't foul the panniers at the front

See, I was part right. (Just for the wrong reason) :D

i have the bosses fitted at the front on my rc37s with xt v brakes....didnt put much tourque into the bolts and they dont appear to move at all..hmmm
