PACE FORKS,,,,,PICKIES UP

Early ones were black painted steel, then came chromed steel, then alloy.

The earliest forks are notible for their coarse weave carbon and matt finish, where as later ones had smooth and glossy carbon. The early ones also had a very marked step-down on the legs whereas later ones had a more gradual taper from one diameter to the next.

These score on both those points as early forks

Did the very early steerer tubes have the split ring at the bottom like the later ones?

I ask because I had a couple of mates who had them pull through the crown after accidents where they'd had an impact from the front.

Steerers pulled through the crown and bent. I'd have thought this couldn't happen if that split ring thing had been there?
