sitting looking out the window at a lovely sunny day, missus at work, motorbike in the garage and bikes in the house, sat on the sofa.

A 40 minute ride on my '94 KHS means I got a bad back again.

This is the 2nd time it's happened. When I ride the thing it hurts, but not too much. Then the next day or day after that I get a terrible pain in the lower/middle back and can hardly move for a few days.

The weird thing is that I spend 1.5 - 2 hours a day on the motorbike and often go on 1-2 hour rides on my road bicycle, but the MTB kills me.

Could some pre-/post ride stretching or something help? Or do I have to stop riding the thing and buy some modern full-sus thing? (without the old-school head down position) .

Don't other old fart (over 30!) retro-bike riders have the same problem?

Bit of a rant, Iknow, but i ain't got too much else to do today!

go and get properly measured and adjust your position .
if that fails , go and see gp .

Yep  The fact your raod bike doesn't hurt seems to suggest that the mtb doesn't fit you as it is currently adjusted. I took a bike out with the bars too low for me today, my shoulders are on fire and my lower back has that "make one false move and I'll put you down" feel about it. Sounds like you just need to adjust your position (or the bike is just plain to big/small)

Feel for you.. Back pain is the pits!

had a bad back for years 9has really slowed me down, used to run heaps and ride heaps... now due to it i'm a slow fat fart, yes it is the ONLY reason :D )... but doing lots...er some core exercises helps lots...

Get back lower back as well if pushing it....often it's what screws up races for me, not my fitness :(

The back is not designed for cycling. A bit of self-care by way of stretching and correct position will certainly help.

In all probability, a good percentage of cyclists (apart from the '2mph on a shopper' brigade) have some sort of a back problem.

Anyone on here ever had any sort of back surgery and are still riding?? If so how does it effect you now?

I broke my back late last season when I over cooked a corner a little bit and landed on my head into a rock. Had a fairly major spinal fusion to fix it but I'm still in recovery and as of yet haven't made it back on a bike. I'm in my 30's now and definitely feel injuries more than I used to. It's unclear whether I'll ever make it back on a big DH bike but I hope I'll be able to carry on riding to some degree.. I hope! :?
