I can't understand why people would want old parts from a classic original retro bike.

You wouldn't go putting an Aston Martin DB5 gearbox in an Aston Martin DBS.

No but as it's a standard ZF box someone may need one to go in another classic from the period. So your XT rear mech may be just what someone needs to finish off their build of another bike and therefore has a value.
