I have had a couple of weeks off this project (and all other bike-related stuff), visiting my lad in Idaho then returning with more than I bargained for...a slight case of Covid! I hate air travel and it was a 48 hour door to door journey from hell to get to my Son's place right next to Yellowstone park, tucked away from civilisation. I had a great time but I will not be going long haul again in a hurry!.
Anyhow, as always, despite not feeling 100% yet, I could not resist a liitle look-see and mock up of the Orbit.
I sourced a NOS Tange fork that will fit the bill for the moment even though I have had to rig up a quill extension ahead conversion. As you can see it has a headtube longer than a donkey's dick and even the NOS fork was not quite long enough. I think the fork suits it quite well and I will try how it rides soon.
I have started cleaning up the frame though I can't work out why it is so bad with all of the lumps in ithe paintwork although it is not badly rusted at all. I would really like to show off the Lee Cooper unfiled fillet brazing and I am trying to work out the best way to do that...any ideas gratefully received. I am toying with the idea of a gunmetal type finish leaving the brazing on show. I guess that means it will be a DiY jobby.
I will probably stick with an XT groupset, I have the cranks and mechs but need shifters and brakes. I will probably put some sort of riser bar on it in silver and that's about it.
Does anyone know what year this is likely to be?
Here it is, looking a lot cleaner than the original photo.
