Orange X1 question - All Sorted thanks for your help

I have bought Russells X1 to build up for a friend, and am doing ok collecting bits, but one thing baffles me...the seat post sizing.

Orange supplied this bike originally with a 29.4mm seat tube diameter, but fitted with a shim to take a 26.4 post (Orange branded). Russell has the shim, and another that can take 27.2, but my question is, in the absence of anyone on here having an Orange 26.4 post I have seen a 29.4mm one that he would like. Is there any reason why this bike needs to have a shimmed seat post???

Thanks[/b]

I have an Orange X1 with it's original seatpost, and I haven't noticed that the seatpost is shimmed.

I'll have a closer look when I get home this evening.

It may depend what year it is. The one I have bought looks to be a '97, and the '97 catalogue scan on here does say that it is 29.4 shimmed to 26.4, so it was defo an official Orange thing.

Anyone have any more info, I have two guys on here possibly holding a post for me and don't want to make them hang around.

Cheers in advance

werent orange hardtails of the period 26.4, thus minimising stock management problems?

My O2 is shimmed in a similar fashion. I just picked up a suitable shim to fit an existing seatpost that i had when i built it. I cant see any reason not to use an un-shimmed post having said that.

Only issue I can think of is that if it was intended to always use a shim (nasty things!), the seat tube might not have been finished properly, all the way down? Doubt it'll be a problem though.

My '96 Orange X1 is a 26.4 (with original Orange seatpost) - no shim that I've ever been aware of...

I've not got an Orange (but I had a satsuma yesterday) but I do have a 26.4 seatpost .... it's a NOS boxed Campag one and it's beautiful (for a seatpost, anyway!)

Always wondered what it might fit ...
