Re:

Looks good, glad I could help, its gonna look ace once built up, as all your builds do in fairness. :D Will follow with interest!!

Re: Orange E2: new project

I was hoping to keep the original decals on it, but the frame has a lot of worming and a few scratches around the top tube.

So it will be a full strip down to the bare aluminium, then a fine wire wool with autosol. It's very time consuming but well worth the effort.

Re: Orange E2: new project

Managed to get the bottom bracket out today, damn thing was dug in like a tic!, it also weighed a ton!

Took a look inside the shell, to check the threads and argggggggh!
the drive side threads are knackered. Looks like somebody's been at it with a screwdriver

Any suggestions?.

Press fit bb maybe?.

Has anyone fitted the Velo Orange threadless bb's, would that do the trick?.

Re:

Very rare the E2's. good find!

Does the thread feel like it would hold another BB? if you can tidy up or re-tap, you may get away with putting a sealed type in..with plenty of threadlock

Re: Orange E2: new project

The original BB seemed to be fitted ok, albeit a little stiff, but was a bugger to get out.

I tried to fit a UN72 into the shell, and found that it went in easily for half a dozen turns, then it seemed to hit a brick wall.
Looking at the picture of the shell, you can see a part of the thread which seems to by slightly raised, I think that must be the brick wall.
Just wondered if I could file that piece down, then somehow re-tap that area.
What do you think.

Re:

That wouldn't frighten me too much, the loss of continuation is fairly negligible.

I would file down any up-stood nasties and then re-tap with plenty of grease on the thread/tool. worth a go, as if that fails you can pop in a threadless BB and still enjoy the bike regardless of thread rescue attempts' outcome.

Now i want another E3...cheers! 8)

Re:

I agree; I'd get the threads chased through and stick in a standard sealed BB. One of those threadless numbers will do the job nicely though if the threads are gone.

Re: Orange E2: new project

Result!!
Filed down the offending obstruction, gave it a thorough clean, then re-greased it.

Re-fitted the UN72 without any problems.

Dilemma over with, next job, off with the lacquer.

Thanks for the advice so far.

Re: Orange E2: new project *2020 UPDATE*

Cleared the laquer off and gave it some elbow grease. Just in time for my decals to arrive.
