I can't decide what to do, so I thought I'd throw it out there and go with the consensus!

I have a Gazelle Trim Trophy ('87) which has been my winter stead for 5 years and is now fixed. I'm likely to ride grasstrack on it with my club (Beacon Wheelers) next season, so it's unlikely to return to a geared bike at any point in the near future. What's more, the gear hanger is trashed and would need replaced if it were to take a rear mech again.

So my question? I'm going to get it repainted by Kevin Winter at the end of 2012 - I have H Lloyd transfers at the ready. But do I get proper track drop outs added and unnecessary metal work shaved off, or keep it true 'just in case'?

On the basis that the mech hanger is trashed, chop it off.

I would say different if it was usable.

a proper track bike has a higher bottom bracket than a road bike, so you may find yourself clipping the inside pedal on the ground and that its not really suitable at all. Rather than spend ?? on new dropouts and a respray, might it not be better to find a used track frame?

Pigman, I getcha. It would be fabulous to have a track specific fixie for competition, but it's unlikely to happen this year and I wouldn't ride that on the road amongst the Cumbrian grit and potholes.

I borrow a Witcomb (sic?) to race on at the mo. Though I use the word race veeeeery loosely.

So it'll be largely for winter and on the road training - would you still avoid the spend?
