On the whole these pedals were okish, i had a few pairs of the ones with the Ti axles and preferred them to Shimano's offerings due to the weight savings.
The elastomers did indeed wear out and i ended up using the black ones all the time and they clog very easy.
Long story short, they served a purpose.
