I recently purchased my first 'proper' road bike.
After a few shakedown rides and getting approx 50 miles on it, I hit the road proper last night on my favorite local route. Its only a 16 mile loop, but has several good climbs.

Well, apart from the fact ive been riding more than usual recently and my fitness is improving, but the bike felt like a missile...

I destroyed every climb and every turn of the pedal left me feeling more like a champion.

What a rush.

Just thought you may like to know :)

after commuting for about 6 years on mountain bikes, thinking "they cant be much slower than road bikes" i have had the last two years on 700c bikes and love em! so much quicker and easier on the hills.

I agree, always tried to defend the honour of the MTB, but after working out that I must ride 90% of the time on the road...and being overtaken once too often by lycra clad whippets, I fancied a change to see if there was anything in it.

It appears there is.

I love the added leverage, and despite it being more of a boneshaker ride, I probably feel more comfortable.

I sprinted up one hill and I swear I could hear my bike shouting out ''Whoooooosh!!!'' as my turbo power kicked in...

i remember in my youth (20) when i joined a new company, there was a road racer there, (had got his name in cycling weekly a few times for races) (was a mtb'er until he buggered his knee) and i thought, yeah im pretty fit, ill cycle home with him, his just blew me out of the water.

One of the reasons I don't have a road bike (apart from geography) is that you see 2 types of people on road bikes. The ones who are obviously good and it all looks effortless and elegant. And the ones who look like they are fighting the bike all the time.

I think I know which camp I'd fall into

I fight mine. No quarter asked for or given. I'm working on the effortless look just at a slower speed. It's all about cadence. Want to look good on a road bike? Type Maurizio Fondriest into youtube and copy him.

I look rediculous on a road bike.

For me, its all about the journey....

Besides, I feel a great sense of well being particularly when passing slow moving traffic. I then know that despite how rediculous I look on a road bike, I look better than every driver I pass...

Id rather be making the effort than worrying about what other think. Try it, you might like it.

If nothing else, Ive noticed bigger fitness improvements than from MTBing alone.
