I knew a lass who had her little toes removed on both feet so she could comfortably wear the shoes she liked..

And a chap who orchestrated an accident whereby his hand was cut off on what I can only describe as a bench mounted angle grinder.. he reckoned he had to chuck it in there 3 times before it actually severed completely.

comments like this were to be expected

IDB1 why would matey cut his hand off  while i think if you cut your finger off etc in one swift go, adrenalin takes over and numbs it somewhat (and shock) but surely chucking it in 3 times, that would hurt!

while im not all that squeamish, this makes me shudder

While some folk are into piercing, tattoo's, etc. others are into amputation and other stuff. . . .

I severed (part of) a digit (as I was quite young, it was more of the finger, than it would look, now), when I was a child.

It was surgically reattached.

Although this happened in the early 70s and I can remember what happened, my initial reaction wasn't because of any pain, it was because of the blood, and something being very wrong. I'd be a toddler at the time, so cried - but this was something of a delayed and considered reaction. And if my memory (as I was growing up or now, in retrospect) is in any way reliable, I don't recall actually feeling any pain at the time.

I must have experienced some pain later on in the treatment and rehabilitation, but I have no memory(/ies) of that, I can only remember it happening, how I reacted, and why.

After severing two tendons in my hand with an angle grinder, I was back at work the next day.

It never really hurt but there were a few fainting moments as the brains natural reactions took over.

it also means that we have had a "lost time accident" which means we all lose our £150 no accidents bonus.

That's harsh man. . . .

Can you not all sue him for £150 each and get your bonus?

Tch, typical blame culture, someone always has to point the finger.
