Olden days canti help

I'm setting up some Dia Compe 1980s cantilevers and there's no adjustment on the spring tension to help centre the brakes. What was the Olden Days method to do this, or should I just shuffle the pads in the canti clamps to compensate?

NB: Frame & fork only have one canti spring hole so I can't change anything there.

Could be wrong but are these the ones with the plier flats on the back covers so you can wind tension into them

Almost fluffy, they are like that schematic but they don't have the elliptical bit in the centre for adjustment (they are very old ie 1983). 981s perhaps?

The spring 'bend' method will have to suffice although the brake pads don't go past the fork blades so I'll have to adjust them AGAIN afterwards.

I'll get some pics once I'm done.

Thanks for your musings
