Old school XTII headset and other stuff

Latest build will be using XTII stuff, the headset that is fitted appears to have a rubber seal instead of a top cap. Anyone seen this before? I can pull it back and expose the top bearings, bit strange. Any thoughts?


And if anyone can tell me a bit more about the stuff it would be appreciated, its a bit before my time.Any good/rare/fragile/expensive etc?

that's the first XT head set. m730, 1988 and 89. pretty rare and nice. was replaced with the m735 in 1990.

that's the first XT head set. m730, 1988 and 89. pretty rare and nice. was replaced with the m735 in 1990.

Doesn't sound like a 730 to me. I've got one here, and it's got a conventional top cap and locknut with rubber ring seals:

Actually, scratch that. Mine must be a 735. There's a 730 pictured in the pdf here that's just as you describe:
