I ...Post a pic of your bike with the chain on the smallest rear sprocket - I'm betting it will look a bit like a Pursuit Track bike...

Will do that. And of course the chain goes on the outside, ending up on the road. It does that though (at least up to now) when not pedalling and after some bump, which makes me also wonder about chain length. Need to measure everything again, I guess, and go from there.

Again a suggestion with no experience but would running a short cage road mech help at all rather than the shadow xt?

I would do so if any of those could cover the 36teeth....
