Old Carlton: Dropout/Wheel Size confusion.

I'm tearing my hair out with this now. It's since been manhandled back into alignment and correct dropout spacing. I put it all back together and something is still seriously off. The chain is coming off the chainring slanted at an angle, occasionally digging in to the chainring and locking up. Likewise it seems to be exiting the rear mech at a weird angle. And I don't mean angle as in the usual left-right angle the chain naturally moves to engage all gears, but like the chain is twisted. I couldn't quite get a decent photo unfortunately.

I don't know where to look next. Frame has been repaired. Wheel respoked and trued. New hanger, replaced rear mech, granted a second-hand part.

Final update for this saga.

Bike is all back together and running perfectly again. Very happy and can’t wait to get out on it.

Turns out that whilst the dropouts were indeed bent out of shape, the thing that was compounding the confusion was that the chain was also bent, as suggested by the previous poster.

So thanks to everyone who chimed in. And a big thanks to Butterworths (AE) of Sheffield, who bent it back into alignment without even getting the tools out, or even charging me anything. When I got it back to my workshop and did the string test, it was bang-on millimetre perfect. So make use of that shop if you’re local.

Cheers.
