Old boys club?

I don't think anyone avoids helping new comers but...

Say you posted a wanted ad for an xtr rear mech. I have one in my drawer right now doing nothing. If I wanted to sell it I would gladly pm you and we could work out a price. However, I don't want to sell as it is pencilled in for a particular project. Now imagine I am out riding with the local retrobikers and someone needs the mech for a build. Would I sell it? I probably would.

Would you sell it in that instance or would you log onto the forum and make sure nobody else wants it as well?

The sale and wanted forums are there for all to see. Like most on here I am happy to help out with parts as and when I can.

I suppose the point is that the new member to the site may be looking for certain parts and really struggle. If they put up wanted ads, make it known they need the part in a build thread and ask around - then find the parts they need being passed around without them being considered a recipient - they are going to feel pretty crap about it. Then maybe their only chance of getting the bits is paying eBay prices or changing plans or not bothering at all.

As has been said before, patience is a virtue. It's roughly the same for everyone. There may well be a degree of helping forum users that have been around for a while, but that's due to getting to know people as in any aspect of life, more than any sense of elitism or through cliques, surely?

So yes, it's always good helping people out you know well, or have traded with before, but think of the newbie sometimes and try and help them too - you never know what they might have lurking in the shed that you might be very grateful for later on!!

So when you've helped that new user find the part they've been seeking for years, and you find out they have something you've also been looking for, what then? Put it on the forum and let everyone have a pop at it, eBay it and let it go to the highest (willing) bidder, or expect a favour/bit of karma in return from someone you might have gotten to know a little bit?

I'm confused now. :-/
I'm sure you see the benefit of encouraging the newcomers, so I'll leave it at that.
Thanks all. :-)
Rob.

I've posted a few things in the Wanted section and have always been lucky with people PMing me. I've also posted in the for sale and missed something to then get a PM from someone offering me the same part or similar.

Maybe I'm just lucky but there are a huge number of extremely helpful people on here who have always been cool if you decline their offer.

I've had wanted adds answered within minutes but have got one up at the moment asking for parts I thought would be easy to find that's had no response. Swings and roundabouts imo.

I'd be disappointed if there wasn't a boys club

It's that kind of set up that enables trust within the forum

And as with any group you do get on better with some than others. Of course as mentioned the longer your in here the more chance you've done favours for others, say a build that needs the last part or pick up and box someone elses eBay bike purchase.

I don't think it singles anyone out to the negative but more importantly provides a group positive

Rob now is the time to tell everyone what you are after :D

+1..

It works as much within this place as outside of it.. and I doubt there's many (if any) social or professional groups where it doesn't exist.

It's certainly not a negative (but can feel like it if you don't play (or are new to) the game)..

Bet you wish you never mentioned it mate
Its just luck and getting yourself out there to meet people
I have been blessed to be in the area to ride with the East Midlands guys and they have made me very welcome
We all love building up old bikes and therefore hoarding and swapping for current and future builds and its just a case of enjoying the process of hunting down those bits or shortcutting with something that will do if you cant wait
Without exception I have found the people here to be friendly and full of the best intentions and I wish you all the luck in your hunt for bits and would be pleased to help you out if I have the answers :D

well said that man!..... :)........i also agree with sylus, many people will stumble across this site having held all our values of comradship and old bike lust before their arrival here, many of which will still be here in years to come offering wisdom and parts to the circle.......i include myself in that, it was only a chance conversation with iwasgoodonce at cannock over a sandy toothed brew that pointed me here......the attitude i rode that day was sourced and restored with me feeling alone in what i now know to be 'retroland'........most noobs here are seasoned cyclists by the very definition of the site, well used to flies in the teeth and 1/4 chainring prints on their best jeans.......welcome all, and good luck in your quest for that elusive part.......patience is a virtue!......anyone got a nos 27.0 xt seatpost by the way?.....
