Re:
A bit of a delay here on the work since my better half has been vacationing in North Carolina for a week...
My son and I just finished cleaning and greasing the axle bearing on the Trek. I'd say the bike rode smooth beforehand on the old grease but when we took the wheel off it was like WOW, this is bad condition. It was all chunky and the axle turned like it had gravel in the bearings.
It has been many, many years since I've done this type of repair. 35 yrs ago I operated a bicycle sales/repair shop as a teenager and did this daily. Brings back long ago memories when working on this today.
The lack of grease in these two axles makes me think it is so much more important to do the same clean/regrease on the head tubes and BB's as well.
Cheers!
