i cant wait i should be getting a 97 explosif soon
though i was wondering....im using maguras hs11 on my 94 cindercone, and i have a spare set i was thinking of useing on the explosif. im just a bit worried becouse i get a lot of flex it the seat stays even with a brake booster would it be such a good idea to use on the explosif with all that fancy tubeing?

I'm not sure this quite answers your question and the picture isn't totally clear, but it's the 1996 catalogue and it shows the standard spec Explosif with Magura HS-11s, so somebody must have thought it worked ok.

I don't know the butting profile for the Max stays, so the seat stays may have been plain-gauge for all I know, but in general the butting profile for stays has the thick bit in the middle not the ends - for just the kind of reason you mention. The Explosif may possibly have had butted seat stays, the Cinder Cone definitely didn't.

I wouldn't mind a pair of those sand-coloured Scratch and Sniff!

Seeing as theres a thread going i have questions,im currently building a kona,i think its a fire mountain,its been painted so no badges,it has a canti hanger boss on the rear,i will get a pic,i think its a '96-97,can i have some info please as i dont know much about this model,was it a cheap model as i read above that its not a race bike,hope not as thats whats intended for?

If you mean a canti hanger as below, then it must be a 97 model.

I would say it was very well worth building with better components. I think the genuine frame weight is probably about 5.0/5.1 for a size 18 and that's still quite light for a steel frame. That was the whole point about 90s Konas - they were built to be upgraded, slightly better quality frame than the competition, cheaper components. My guess is that it's the fact that Konas were so often upgraded that explains why there are still so many of them in use now.

Thats it,thats the Blue ive found under the top paint,cheers mate,frame weight isnt brilliant but will still be light build with the gear im putting on it,going for older style decals though,never liked them type on it.

happy now, i was getting a bit confused the frame im getting was advertised as 97 but must have been 96 sold in 97, it has a couple of dings but i think all my konas exept one has so it will fit in nice i prefer the older decals too.

id say the fire mountin is defintly worth building up, my friend had one and i found it hard to tell the difference between that and my cindercone. im tempted to spray one of them white after seeing lots of white ones on here, they do look nice.

The Hot is the top of the range steel hardtail built in the US by custom framebuilders. Tom Teesdale from '90-'95. Altitude cycles in Chico California from '96 onwards
