Off Road lights

The best off the shelf light i've seen so far has been the Hope 4 LED - not just for the product but for the customer service as well. CK picked his up for £150 s/h and as it's hope you have support at the major events - easy access to spares and superb customer service. If youre technicly minded you can't go wrong with a Troutlight for some serious power. I have a 6xpe one of his that i built up and have yet to see anything as powerfull.

I just ordered a set of Ay-ups, I bought the MTB kit with a spare 6 hour battery, which gives me a total of 9 -10 hours of burn time on both the light units. I also ordered two head band adaptors (for walking / camping) and the Gekko helment mounts.

This has been a serious investment  , but I couldn't find a bad review of the lights and we all know how many whingers there are on the web! Some of my mates have them and think they're great. The LEDs have recently changed from Luxeon to CREE, which are supposedly brighter.

If you want some good lights, not the absolute brightest, but with a very long burn time, these are a good choice. They're also really light weight.

Thanks for all the advice & links, I'm not sure of my DIY electronic capabilities, but very interested in the Troutelight on STW. Anyone got much experience using one? visited his site, but can't figure out if there's a low power setting, & would I have to fabricate the bar mount?

I have the troutlight 6 xpe light. Just buy a bar mount from Lumicycle and it screws straight in. the driver is programable, so you can set it to which ever lvls you want, either dual mode = high and low or 5 mode with 5 different lvls of light. People seemed quite impressed with mine at mayhem and i've yet to see anything as bright.

princeton tec. Go under the name of switchback on the web I think, as the 'tec actually usually do diving lights as their regular line of work.

They're great. I have the "3". two mates have the "2". All fantastic. But extra no longer bring them into the uk, so best trawl the web or ebay for US vendors. .

My nitesuns are just too old skool now. OK for commuting, but the game has moved on. .

Another big up for the hope 4 led unit, its done me well. I would suggest that you look at getting a bar and helmet combination though. Having a less powerful spotlight mounted on your lid really helps on singletrack.

I have a Hope Vision 2 on my helmet and a Vision 1 on my handlebars and they have both been excellent. One of the batteries went on the Vision 2 and Hope fixed it out of warranty FOC.

Helment mounting really makes sense for singletrack riding and also helps in the dark deep woods. With a light on your helmet evrything you look at is lit up and you don't feel so scared!

That crazy 900 lumin light looks interesting though!

I couldn't resist the el-cheapo DX / magicshine light.

Who knows how long it'll last (just an excuse to make it better then anyway!), but it's looking good so far...

Need to take some beam shots of it compared to my old over-volted halogen setup, but there's no doubting that it's impressive for the size/price/runtime. 8)
