Anyone come across some non catalogue spec Raleighs out there. Eg mine from very late 83 is badged as a Competition but came with Campag GS brakes, Suntour mechs and shifter, Weinmann brake levers and Cinelli bars and Stem plus GP4's on Campag Tipo hubs. Its as near as damn it the same blue, with white lining and panels as this forum lower down the page. 531c badges on fork and frame. Why?
It was one of a batch of 20+ orered for the O Ed course 1st year at Bangor Normal College. They were apparently built for us as the head of department (John Brailsford, dad of Dave) had links with Raleigh or the O'Donovans at Carlton. They all arrived slightly differently speced. I asked for tubs as did one other lad. The rest were on clinchers. Some has SR bars. We provided our measurements and they arrived at a silly low cost. I seem to remember a suggestion that they were left overs, painted in a non road bike colour. The year before mine were deep burgundy. I have one of those which has a Carlton decal on it instead of the Competition one. That year were stamped with the owners name, one appeared on ebay last year. The previous year again were post office red with white like mine and I am told that the year before that were green Carltons. One like that is for sale some where at the moment on the web.
Anyone come across any more? I know of one of the burgundy ones, now resprayed, nearby. Another burgundy was the one sold on ebay last year. It least one blue one is still with its original owner in Scotland.
It would be interesting to see where they went.
