I'm about an hour from Chamonix, get in contact and I'll show you where the locals ride round here. There are lots of mtb associations and occasionally you see signs saying 'VTT rando' that's where a bunch of people get together and do a kind of mass xc ride with isually a meal at the end of it, everyone's welcome, just turn up and join in.
