NOS

I got a pair of NOS Deore Thumbies from Hong Kong a few months ago. £35, original cables, utterly markless, still had the protective stickers on. *That's* NOS!

Semantics of what constitutes "NOS". Couple of examples, first relates to the rim bun fight. I have a wheel that was built up then hung in the shop for 15 odd years. As a wheel, it's New, It's Old, and it was in Stock. As parts, that's subjective. New? the hub and rim have been laced, so not really. Unused? Yes.

Here's another one where semantics come in to play. New, Old Syncros hub that was in Stock in a bin with some other hubs. The logo has marks from sitting against other hubs over the years. NOS? Yes. NIB? No. NOS with shop wear? Probably the best description.

I just find it amusing that everyone gets their panties in a bunch over it. I try to be accurate in my description of stuff I'm selling, be it NOS, NIB, take-off, etc. I have a set of WI/Mavic wheels that were a take-off from a Mongoose 9.7. From the looks of the rotors they made a few laps around the parking lot on test rides. Are they new? If not, when you go to buy a new car and someone had taken it out for a test drive prior to you looking at it, is it now used?

Yes, a car that has been test driven by anyone other than the mechanic who is doing the PDI is a used car, or ex-demo as they tend to be called.

I think folk only get their panties in a twist when there is a difference between expectation and reality. If an item is honestly described then there shouldn't be a problem. New shop soiled, or built not ridden are suitable descriptions, but NOS should be perfect. It is just the chancers who want a few extra quid that spoil the party for everyone.
