NOS stuff and ebay

You cant help but notice the sheer amount of NOS stuff for BMX's on fleabay. Where has all this stuff been all these years? Are we gonna see a similar thing happen with mtb bits, driving down prices and taking the fun out of searching for that elusive part?
As this site grows and more people catch the retro bug, surely its only a matter of time until this happens as people find all this new stuff in their parent garage and try to cash in.
So I have an idea, why dont we hold our own auctions right here? The poster can list an item and invite bids. After ~3 days the highest bidder wins, gets a bargain, the seller avoids fees, and the bits stay within the RB network. A Win-win-win situation!

I don't think the mtb market fell as hard

we kind of have an informal version of that already when somebody invites offers - (s)he will then assess the best offer and sell accordingly. It's just not structured that's all.

Good idea though.

All these new parts are starting to show up because the demand has risen enough to now make it worth while to dig up this old stuff, take some pictures and sell it.

Also, as more people collect, whats available out there will decrease, and values will go up, not down.


The US and the UK are late to the party.
Gemany, Italy, Spain, Japan...they've been on the NOS mtb collecting trail for a bit longer.



I'm all for bro-dealing my friends...but if I'm going to sell my hard earned/found vintage mtb stuff, I want top dollar. It's going on eBay.

Vintage mtb collecting is far, far bigger than Retrobike (and MTBR and MTB-news, etc). The VRC community is world wide. I think you'll find it difficult to buy/sell/collect with out this network.

although there is alot of items available at any one time on the bay, they are not always good quality, and very often duplicates. for example, if you want a good quality stem, there are really only one or two to choose from, and they are not what was considered exotic/desirable back in the day, nothing wrong with a kusuki but its not exactly a tuff neck. its these gems that pop up every so often that are worth keeping an eye out for.

nobody wanted landar headlocks back then, they wanted hutch ones(no idea why!), so why can somebody turn up on the bay with "50 available" and think they can charge the earth for them?
