nos, new, kona cinder cone frame, 1994

1994 Cindercone

Sorry Kase I didn't mean your specific Cinder cone, rather the model in general. Surely the Explosifs and Kilaueas with their more exotic steels are more collectable / desirable?

Best wishes

I'm a fan of the steel cindercones because they ride just as well as the more exotic Kona frames and in some respects feel like they can take more abuse.

I have a 94 version too.....

Well there I'd have to disagree with you Mr Ling, just this once though, and only partly. My 97 Lava Dome may well be capable of taking more abuse than my 97 Kilauea, being as it's made of thicker-gauge tubing, with a fatter top tube and thicker-gauge stays, but there's no way it rides as well. The Kilauea is much more fluid over rough ground, and therefore faster.

I think Plasma's point is very valid. Not that you see many classic steel Rockhoppers and Stumpjumpers for sale, but if you did the difference in value would be far greater than the difference between a Dome/Cone and an Explosif. I think that's because the Konas all look the same and many buyers don't appreciate what tubesets they're made of. Whereas I think most years it was possible to tell a Rockhopper apart from a Stumpjumper much more easily, and I don't think many Stumpy owners would say their frame was no better than a Rockhopper.

Where your point may be stronger is in size-specificity - you're much bigger than I am, so maybe you'd find a size 20 Kilauea too flexy, and you'd really need the high-end racing-type frames to be made with thicker tubing in the bigger sizes? There's still a lot of people who think lighter = better, but actually what you need is the right amount of metal for the forces the frame has to deal with. So a Dome/Cone is over-built for me, but probably not for you.

Cinder cones

Hi Anthony,

As my local framebuilder states, "it's not lightweight, it's rightweight that's important."

Well it turned up today and its minty, mint  and it looks like I somehow avoided paying duty as well

Nice one fella, how on earth did you duck the duty? Who delivered it...you might get a bill in the post!
Damned annoying...I ordered some $190 cranks from the States and got clobbered for £20...my mate orders shoes and stuff and never gets hit..and they are bigger boxes.
Hey ho, very nice frame, whatcha going to do with it?
Carl

No idea how I ducked the duty :? all the other times Parcel force have delivered from the U.S I've been sent a litlte tear open letter saying pay up and you can have your shiny bits :?

This time he just handed it over :D

I know it sounds daft with a NOS frame but its going to be my main rider  so its going to be very sensible XT 8 speed throughout with maybe a few trick bits just to finish it off nicely
