This is one you won't often see - a 2001 Kilauea frame never previously built up. The seller sent me this message:
"I have had the frame a while, I bought from a friend who had to have his frame replaced, but by the time this particular frame had arrived he had been out and bought a Trek. I bought it about 6 years ago with a view to building it up to replace my very trusted Explosiv. I finally got it built up last year, but I am finding it really difficult to ride any of my bikes at all, so it has never been used! The frame is 18" measured the Kona way. Hope this helps, if you want to know any more or want to pop round to see it let me know."
I don't know anything about these frames, so if anybody could fill me in I'd be grateful. Kilaueas were last sold as bikes in 1998, following which the Caldera became the next steel model down from the Explosif. Then the Caldera went over to the dark side in 2000, so I believe these Kilauea frames were made up just for the UK market, as there was still some steel demand here. They were priced at £299 (older Kilaueas had been £399) and as the tubeset wasn't specified I've always kind of assumed that it was generic 4130 and the frames were similar to the 99 Caldera - i.e., still very good but maybe not quite to classic Kilauea standard. Anybody got more info?
