Noob Question..MTB on road

Did 13.5 miles today, believing i started the day at 93.86 mile total.Just did some final maths and forgot a trip so i actually did 117.08. So reached my goal yesterday!!

Now I'm annoyed i didnt triple check before hand as i could have rested the legs today. And then maybe tried a 30 mile ride on sunday, another thought i had was to back off a bit and do 3 x 20 miles next week along with some olympic lifting

Any thoughts/advice welcome

Oh, and by the way, my Brighton trip wasn't done on my roadbike. On my Marin with 26 x 1.50 Bontrager Road Warrior tyres. 8)

Best part was the early bit with my mp3 player keeping me company until the traffic built up and my LED Lenser P7 headtorch lighting up the road.

However, did a similar 'once around the whole island' trip around the Isle of Wight a few weeks later on my road bike - never knew that it was so hilly! Glad it had 48/34 chainrings. 8)

I dont at the moment, have not lifted a weight for about 7 years.Back when i was lifting at one point i tried ALL the lifts. Same applies to PL would like to start again, but i just know i will get side-tracked and start chasing numbers and possibly cause further damage to my body.

With the benefit of hindsight i put Olympic lifting ahead of powerlifting or bodybuilding routines. You can create enough stimuli for growth while getting a solid cardio workout. Will be happy enough to throw the bar and couple of 20's around for a few weeks. I really miss overhead squats, out in the garden with an empty bar first for those i think!

Had i not got ill i was heading towards 800kg at around 85kg's, actual total probably 750kg but i never ever trained legs so had a weak squat

Next time, tell the roadies that you need a bike with sus for the roads these days.
Due to all the potholes

Poor old roadies are always having their wheels trued, due to the crap roads in this country.
Just give them a little reminder

Why never ever train legs? Surely if you're going to do weight training, it makes most sense to apply it to other physical / sporting pursuits - like cycling.

Squats and leg press are effective lifts for cyclists - don't make the mistake of that old chestnut "I play five-a-side on Sundays, so don't need to train my legs..."

I use my 1991 Funk as my road bike these days, fitted with 1.5 slicks. It works fine on the road, and is fun when I overtake roadies on their fancy machines.

+1...... me too

At that point in time i was training mostly for vanity reasons and wrongly deemed the upper half more important ( for what it's worth was not cycling at that time ) Think if you go to a gym you will see this very common among regular gym goers which i was at the time.

When i say never i mean, maybe throwing in a leg session once a month rather than every week

Oh I do - I see it all the time.

I just couldn't reggae that with olympic and powerlifting, that's all.

Don't make that mistake, now - it's mucho use for cycling, and of great use generally, and if you have leanings towards olympic lifting, really important, and if you have aspirations for powerlifting, downright essential. 2 of the 3 key lifts for powerlifters are huge leg movements.

As for overhead squats, I've never quite decided whether I think they're an inspired exercise, or retarded. There's strong arguments for either ;-) There's a lot of olympic lifts I like - I think they're very useful, and rarely seen in most gyms, these days.

As to powerlifting, personally I'm ambivalent about bench press, really. Shoulder and rotator cuff issues have really put paid to any serious weight on the bar for me, now. Squats I love as an exercise, let's face it, the daddy of all leg lifts, all the way to the floor (important if you have leanings towards powerlifting, and the best damned way to do them anyway). Traditional deadlifts I've never really gotten into - I just don't personally get them as a lift. Romanian and stiff-legged I regularly do, but normal deadlifts aren't me, really.

15 minutes on the heavy bag, and hit the showers ;-)
