so my budget toshiba blue ray player only has two aux outputs so how does it work with a 5.1 speaker system?

also my toshiba tv doesn't have any audio outputs at all, bar a headphone socket. am i stuck with the frankly crap tv speakers?

I'd assume the bluray player would have a hdmi output at least along with some kind of digital output (coax or spdif). To connect the bluray to a 5.1 speaker system you'd need an amplifier between player and speakers. If you're looking to get 5.1 as cheap as poss you might be better with a 'one box' / complete set solution which includes player, amp and speakers. I can't seeing any Blu-ray player being made without HDMI, let alone optical and/or digital coax audio outputs. Post up the model number, or a pic of the back panel.

As John said, you need an AV amplifier to get 5.1

There will be coax and optical digital outs even on the cheapest blu-ray machines.

If your 5.1 system is so old it predates DVD you are screwed but otherwise it will also have coax and optical digital IN.

It's just a question of configuring your receiver so it can find the signal. It will automatically decode the DTS channel for playback.

If you don't have an AV receiver then I don't understand why you are asking this atall.

As you mention, receivers / amps from DVD days - not all of them, then, decoded DTS - in fact in the early days, not all DVD players dealt with DTS.

A bit irrelevant for a Blu-Ray player...

Your TV may still have a Scart socket with which you can connect a Scart to Phono lead allowing at least sound through the TV. If you have a surround system (which you dont actually mention) you will have to connect those same Phono connections to whatever it is that you currently listen to such as any of those red or white sockets on the back (except the record player input if you have one).

If the Blu-Ray player has a digital output (check inst manual!) such as a single black phono socket or optical output (as above), your audio system will also have to have one of these as an input so you can get 'surround'. You will need a specific cable either optical or digital. You can just bung on any old cable!

The Richer Sounds folk should be able to help - dont be afraid to ask.

I do have a Denon Dolby AVR 1602 DD/DTS receiver going spare btw...

Cheers for the help guys. I have a very very very basic 5.1 system of a sub with on board amp and 5 sat speakers. It has 5 phonograph type inputs for 5.1 or two aux inputs for 2.1. Will check for optical connections

If your player has analog outputs like the pic above you can connect each channel via analoge. Looks like a new sound sytem is required?

yeah a new system may be in order. i have some nice missions i can use for the four corners and someone has offered me a av am for a decent price so maybe the way to go. think the system i have is for a pc looking at it.
