Night shift

Unless you feel shagged out then don't go to bed straight away

remember very few daylight people go to bed at 5pm. I used to do chores, odd jobs, shopping etc then around lunch time go na nights and yes..dark curtians and ear plugs do work

depends also if you live alone

Cheers for that suggestion, my other half lives with but disappears off about 7am to go to work. The street I live is always busy so have that distraction as well

Ive worked nightshift for 2 years now & its still a killer..

10pm - 6am mon-thurs & friday 4pm-9pm which is awful

My mrs goes to work at 7am so i take daughter to nursery at 7.30, in bed for 8 and up about 3-4pm

I use an eyemask which totally blacks everything out and now and again earplugs..

I find the multicoloured Howard Leight ones the best..

Now and again I have a cheeky can of beer before bed & then I'm a gonner..

Try to get as much sunlight as possible at weekends or whenever you can as your body is missing out on the rays..

Hope this helps..

If all else fails ....... DRINK !!
It's decades since I last worked shifts (and then, really, only for about 2 years). I don't think I ever really got something satisfactory sorted out for the late shifts in terms of sleep. One thing I've read about booze, though, being that it may help getting you to sleep initially, but makes for more disturbed sleep after that.

Done shift work for 19 years.. slept when I was tired.

Blackout curtains/blinds were a help sometimes, not mad keen on earplugs..

Getting into the habit of drinking alcohol to sleep isn't, imo, a wise move.

What shift pattern you working?

Worked almost a decade on shifts in an army commcenter and it was the best time ever. Loved the having the "dayoff" and managing it away from the 9 to 5 crowds. Since then I dont mind sleeping for 3 ou 4 hours a day. Once you get used its great.

Blackout curtains. NO TEA COFFEE OR SUGARS. Drink little or nothing. You must pee before going to bed. Get straight to bed and read a book. No texts, no emails or internet. Slow and calm your mind down. Currently on a night shift. Been on them for 22 years...bliss!

I used to love working nights, it's like lister says in one of the red dwarf books...when you do an all nighter you feel you deserve those piles of bacon at the cafe in the morning.

There was just something great about coming home, having breakfast at a cafe on the way, then watching the morning news whilst knowing that you could go to bed in a few hours whilst the rest of the world would just be starting work.

Anyway get an eyemask thing if you don't have really dark curtains, if sound is a problem on your street invest in heavier curtains it really cuts the sound out and wear ear plugs too...i never got along with ear plugs but i could sleep through a war happening outside my front door.
